Please note that safety is always our main priority in the gym.  All gym safety rules, protocols and routines will be discussed and practiced with students as our main focus during the restart of school, and these will be implemented in every class going forward. In the gym, masks will be worn, and social distancing will be in place through personal space areas, line up areas, and individual station areas marked with floor tape.  Students will each have their own personal space areas during class in the gym, and additionally, there are taped lines on the sidelines and end lines of the gym floor for socially distant lining up.  Individual station activities have been added in various locations on the gym walls where movement and fitness task card posters have been added. Furthermore, we also have a projector to project various movement, skill, and fitness-related activities on the screen in the gym for students as well as another way to achieve socially distant activity time.  Also, we will have hand sanitizing stations at the entrance and exit of the gym for students to use upon entering and exiting the gym, and also between station time activities.

Safety Considerations for Physical Education at Home:

Please make sure that there is an open space, free from any tripping hazards and away from furniture for your student to participate in Physical Education activities at home.  Also, please take into account any medical considerations as related to your student participating in physical activity by following advice from their physician when it comes to any need for asthma pumps and protocols, along with any other medical needs or conditions.
For physical activity, children should get 60 minutes per day, and adults, at least 30 minutes.  Please aim for 30 minutes per day using daily lesson ideas with at least half of this time as moderate to vigorous activity, plus family.gonoodle.com or going for a safe walk with your child for the additional activity time.  Lastly, we would like to thank all parents, guardians, and families for your assistance in helping facilitate PE activities at home for your student.  We truly appreciate it, and wish everyone the very best in this tough time.  Stay well, and stay safe!

- Mr. Sylvester, Mr. Christley, & Mr. LaBreck

CT Fitness Testing Practice:
For Grades 3-6, it is important to practice fitness test exercises at home not only to help improve your fitness scores and prepare for future fitness testing, but most importantly, to help improve overall physical fitness.  It is also a good idea to do a stretching routine as practiced in class before doing cardiovascular exercise, curl-ups or push-ups.

The PACER Test is one that is practiced at school, but ways to improve cardiovascular endurance are: jumping rope, jumping jacks, dancing, or participate in any number of movement activities.

  • For flexibility, practice the hamstring stretch - seated, and keep your knee flat on the ground for the leg being stretched, and reach forward towards your toes with one hand on top of the other.
  • For muscular endurance, practice the curl-ups (curl position = hands on the ground, and slide your hands forward as you move halfway upward each time, and keep your heels on the ground).

  • For muscular strength, practice the push-ups (push-up position = back and body straight, and elbows bent at a 90 degree angle when you move down on each repetition).
