Physical Education News & Notes

Picture
Welcome back to another exciting year of activities in Physical Education at Lincoln Bassett Community School!  We are exciting to welcome Mrs. Mayberry to our Physical Education team and all our new students joining us from Wexler Grant School!

Please note that safety is always our main priority in the gym.  All gym safety rules, protocols and routines will be discussed and practiced with students as we begin the new 2025-26 school year along with reminders and review occurring periodically.  We are excited to help all our students develop improved physical literacy along in a variety of movement, fitness, and skill-related activities.  Other points of emphasis include various aspects of social emotional learning and team-building activities and segments happening in Physical Education as well.  Ultimately, we want our students to have a positive experience in P.E. classes and a sense of value for the importance and benefits of physical activity both now and later on throughout life.

Physical Education 2025-26 Events

At LBCS, we are proud to have made community connections and partnerships with the Squash Haven Program along with the USTA which allows for our students to have the opportunity to participate in the New HYTEs Tennis & Enrichment Program in the area.  Additionally, students from various grades will also be able to participate in some of the following events below this school year (event dates to follow as they are learned periodically).

Our 2nd Graders will be participating in the new NHPS PE Department and city initiative Bike Program

Our 6th Graders will be taking part in several Project Pride Field Trips once again this school year.  More details of the dates and events will be coming soon!

Select students from Grades 3-6 will once again be chosen to compete in the Citywide PE Fun Run Event in Spring 2026

Select students from Grades 7-8 will be chosen to compete in the Citywide Middle School Track & Field Events in Spring 2026

What will Students be Learning in P.E. Class?

Pre-K:  Strong focus on gross motor development and locomotor movements to help students develop balance, coordination and basic movement principles.  We will also work on various skill-related tasks and activities that include kicking, bouncing, and tossing along with much more!

K-2:  A variety of movement-related and skill-focused units and activities to help improve student fitness and help students develop a solid foundation of skill development to help them build up to being able to successfully participate in various sports and activities as they grow older.

3-6:  A variety of skill-related units and fitness-themed units and activities to help students continue to build physical literacy with various sports skills and dance, along with building up physical fitness in relation to our CT Fitness Testing Components and overall health and wellness.'

7-8:  A variety of fitness and skill-related activities within our units to not only build physical literacy in a variety of exercises and sport-related skills, but also to work on strategies, tactics, and added teamwork elements within our unit structures.  CT Fitness Testing Components will also be one of our main points of focus throughout the school year.

CT Fitness Testing Practice:
For Grades 3-8, it is important to practice fitness test exercises at home not only to help improve your fitness scores and prepare for future fitness testing, but most importantly, to help improve overall physical fitness.  It is also a good idea to do a stretching routine as practiced in class before doing cardiovascular exercise, curl-ups or push-ups.

The PACER Test is one that is practiced at school, but ways to improve cardiovascular endurance are: jumping rope, jumping jacks, dancing, or participate in any number of movement activities.

  • For flexibility, practice the hamstring stretch - seated, and keep your knee flat on the ground for the leg being stretched, and reach forward towards your toes with one hand on top of the other.
  • For muscular endurance, practice the curl-ups (curl position = hands on the ground, and slide your hands forward as you move halfway upward each time, and keep your heels on the ground).

  • For muscular strength, practice the push-ups (push-up position = back and body straight, and elbows bent at a 90 degree angle when you move down on each repetition).
